Perez becomes Microsoft Certified Professional

(Posted: Wednesday, May 06, 2009)
Frank Perez, a Software Developer here at White Light Computing, passed the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - Implementation and Maintenance exam and is now a Microsoft Certified Professional. From the Microsoft Web site exam page:

”Candidates have sought out knowledge and experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to enhance their technical expertise, and they can implement and maintain databases by using specific instructions and specifications.”

This particular exam tests the installation and configuring of SQL Server 2005, implementation and disaster recovery, supporting users, maintaining and troubleshooting performance, and creating and implementing database objects. Frank spent a lot of personal time learning about SQL Server 2005 and preparing for this exam.

White Light Computing encourages the developers on our staff to complete certification exams because it forces in-depth learning of the technologies we use to build solutions for our customer. Personal growth in different technologies is a real positive for White Light Computing, the individual customers we serve, and for our development staff.

Congratulations Frank, and keep up the good work.

ViewEditor Professional v3.6 SP1 Released

(Posted: Sunday, October 01, 2006)
(Updated: Sunday, October 15, 2006)
White Light Computing is pleased to announce the official release of ViewEditor Professional v3.6 Service Pack 1! This release is free for registered developers.

List of the new/updated features in this release:
  • Include comments in view script (like the date/time it was generated and the view Comment property).
  • Added more documentation on setting up macro substitution view parameters with VFP 9 based on feedback from developers in the "Macro expansion and view clauses topic" in this Help file.
Bug Fixes:
  • The Inherit Table Properties feature triggered the error message "Not a character expression" when running the ViewEditor from the Stonefield Database Toolkit.
  • The Inherit Table Properties feature stopped inheriting field properties if one field has a bad UpdateName.
  • The Copy View Code feature was missing the Comment property for fields (it has been in the view properties).
  • The Copy View Code feature was using brackets for quoting character strings on DBSETPROP() values. This was a problem if you had bracketed strings for view and field properties such as Caption, RuleText, etc. The code now has brackets ([]) if you have single or double quotes, and double quotes if you have brackets in the strings. Single quotes are used if there are no brackets or single quotes in the string. If you are mixing and matching you may get unexpected results in the code.
  • Cleaned up view code with respect to DBSETPROP() in the generated code.
The current ViewEditor Help file is available for you to review if you want to learn more about this popular tool.

ViewEditor is reviewed

(Posted: Friday, September 09, 2005)
Burt Rosen of Software News and Views posted a review of our ViewEditor Professional. Burt notes:

"In summary, I give ViewEditor an A for features, an A- for documentation and an A+ for technical support. I highly recommend this product. At a $75.00 per developer license fee, it is well worth the money. I easily saved the cost of purchase in my first use of this software."

It is always nice when the review is positive, but even better when a customer is satisfied with the product.

ViewEditor v3.6 Enters Beta

(Posted: Monday, August 29, 2005)
White Light Computing announces ViewEditor Professional v3.6 entered beta today. A small team of dedicated developers are hard at work testing out all the new features (and several bug fixes) included the new version.

New features added so far:

  1. SQL code window is now a normal program editor window when you are using a VFP Resource file (FoxUser), otherwise it uses the same editor window it has used since this tool was first released (fixed size to start). This allows you to retain the size and fonts you specify for the program editor.

  2. You can specify Default SQL code when you first edit the SQL in the SQL program editor. This new code defaults to the null character string, but you can change the default code on the Configuration page.

  3. The Validate SQL setting is saved between sessions instead of defaulting to "on" each time you start the ViewEditor.

  4. The AllowSimultaneousFetch view property introduced in VFP 8 can be set on the View Properties page when running ViewEditor in VFP 8 or higher on remote views with shared connections.

  5. The list of views and tables (when opening a view, or when copying columns to clipboard) are now ordered based on the collation sequence you select. This defaults to Machine because this is what the lists were previous to this release, but you can change the collation on the Configuration page.

  6. The main ViewEditor window is now resizable when using VFP 9 or better.

  7. Table and view selection dialog retains the position and size between ViewEditor sessions.

  8. Minor user interface tweaks.

  9. Added FAQs, macro expansion and view clauses, and made some improvements on the DBC-Specific Options Help topics.

  10. New version of the Help file includes Favorites page (based on upgrade to West Wind HTML Help Builder 4.0).

We expect the beta to last a few weeks, but longer if necessary. The product will be shipped when it is ready, not a minute before.

DBCX Metadata Compare Utility Updated - Again

(Posted: Monday, June 27, 2005)
White Light Computing announces the DBCX Metadata Compare Utility has been updated. Several changes were incorporated into this release based on user feedback.

  • Added functionality which evaluates which columns are missing from each of the files. This is particularly important when DBCX vendors update the metadata files and only one set of the files compared have the new columns.
  • Added new column details based on enhancements to the VFE metadata during the release of VFE 8 Beta 4.
  • Added new option to select the Visual FoxExpress SDT metadata for comparison. Previous versions automatically checked for both if you selected SDT and you would get a messagebox that one or the other was not found. They are mutually exclusive choices, but VFE developers have the option of using one or the other. So instead of trying to guess here, we allow the developer ultimate control. The message is still displayed when the files do not exist. To get rid of the message, disable the specific comparison.
  • Added column number to "Difference in fields in common records" for all metadata comparison.
  • Added WAIT WINDOWS showing the progress of the comparison and what metadata is being compared.
  • Changed the directory textboxes to select the text on entry.
  • Made the form a little taller to fit in the new VFE SDT checkbox and allow more of the ReadMe text to show.
  • Added error trapping and logging to a text file (MetadataCompareErrors.txt). This information might be handy for the support staff at White Light Computing to figure out the why, when things go wrong.
  • BUG FIX: If you compare metadata without the nStepValue and nNextValue and a set with this information, the program crashed. This usually occurs when you updated metadata based on VFP 8 and above. This not longer happens.
  • BUG FIX: If you select VFE and do not check Stonefield Database Toolkit, the comparison prompted a messagebox noting the SDT VFE files were not found even though SDT is not selected. This has been corrected by adding the new VFE SDT checkbox.
  • BUG FIX: If the metadata in the original set had more fields than the metadata in the current set, a syntax error was thrown. This was fixed
Many thanks to Mary Pilon and Randy Jean for their beta testing and important feedback.

DBCX Metadata Compare Utility Updated

(Posted: Sunday, June 05, 2005)
White Light Computing announces the DBCX Metadata Compare Utility has been updated. Several changes were incorporated into this release based on user feedback.

  • Added functionality to account for deleted records in the metadata. Record counts in the output is the total number of records from RECCOUNT() which includes deleted records. The results now include a count of the deleted records in the metadata table in the base result for the table.
  • Deleted records are shown in the output, but previous versions did not indicate if the data was deleted or live. A check mark at the beginning of the result indicates a live record, and an "X" tells you the record is deleted in the metadata.
  • If you run the comparison and output to the VFP report or report preview in VFP 9, the new Report Designer functionality is used instead of the legacy Report Designer.
